Correction In our last issue, in a story entitled ³Hepatitis C lookback plan delayed; Congressman criticizes federal response,² we listed groups for whom routine hepatitis C screening has been recommended by CDC. One group, those who ever had a sexually-transmitted disease, was listed in error. Although CDC considered including this group in the recommendation, it was eventually dropped. The following groups should be routinely screened for hepatitis C infection based on their risk for infection (See CDC. Recommendations for prevention and control of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and HCV-related chronic disease. MMWR 1998;47 (No. RR-19)): 1. Persons who ever injected illegal drugs (even once); 2. Persons who received clotting factor concentrates produced before 1987; 3. Persons who were ever on chronic (long-term) hemodialysis; 4. Persons with persistently abnormal alanine aminotransferase levels; Persons who were notified that they received blood from a donor who later tested positive for HCV infection; 5. Persons who received a transfusion of blood, blood components or an organ transplant before July 1992. |
